Can’t get enough of the 90s? I don’t blame you. Here are some reviews and recommendations if you want to dig deeper.

Books

The Nineties, by Chuck Klosterman: I’m not the only one who was annoyed with CD packaging. This book is definitely worth exploring if you’re interested in someone else’s perspective on many of the topics discussed here, including Titanic, OJ, and Pepsi Clear. My man Chuck also dives into news events I don’t remember very clearly, like Biosphere 2 and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. I loved going along for the ride as my favorite writer took on my favorite decade.

Smash! Greenday, The Offspring, Bad Religion, NOFX, and the ’90s Punk Explosion, by Ian Winwood: 90s punk had a horrible reputation, but I think enough time has passed that people can (hopefully) respect it. From detailing the club scene and obscure bands of Oakland, California, to tracing the remarkable and enduring influence of Bad Religion, Winwood narrates a captivating punk journey that may just introduce you to a new favorite. I blew through this one.

Movies

Oasis Knebworth 1996: If you’re an Oasis fan, go watch this right now.  It’s basically an entire 2-day concert in two hours.  If you’re not an Oasis fan, consider watching it anyway.  It’s also a great reminder of what concerts were like pre-smartphone.

Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage: Um, yeah. Don’t watch this unless you’re prepared to feel a little ashamed.  It’s kind of nuts.  I mean, it happened, and we can’t ignore it. Except that we can, so maybe we should.

TV Shows

The Last Dance:  Love ’em or hate ’em, the 90s Bulls made the entire country pay attention to NBA basketball. Even if you’re not a basketball fan, you’ll enjoy this series.  Over 10 episodes, the players and coaches from the 1990s Championship-dominating team tell the story of how they did it and of just how phenomenal Michael Jordan was.  If you’re not currently watching basketball, there’s a decent chance this series will make you a convert.  Plus, the soundtrack serves up quality 90s hits.

The Dark Side of the 90s:  There’s something (disturbing) for everyone in this documentary series. From refuge and tragedy at “The Viper Room” to stay-at-home moms willing to throw down for the latest Beanie Baby, this series reveals not only the dark side, but the absurdity, of the era. First 10 episodes got you hooked? Good news: it’s been renewed for another season. Catch the trailer here.
